The prompt for today's challenge was to write a sonnet. I chose to write a Shakespearean sonnet which means the rhyme scheme is a-b-a-b, c-d-c-d, e-f-e-f, g-g. It is supposed to be in iambic pentameter. I have to confess that mine most likely is not! Frankly, I just concentrated on the rhyming scheme and decided to see what would come about not really troubling myself over the rhythm. Now that the challenge is about midway through I'm trying to stretch myself a bit and write about things I ordinarily don't.
Hope you enjoy it. I'd love your thoughts. Thank you!

Broken Dawn
Broken dawn bursts through my window
Broken dawn bursts through my window
Like an unwelcome guest she saunters in
Weaving secrets that are hers to sew
She feels no need to be forgiven.
Painting in my mind's eye a picture grim
And it's not even after seven o'clock
Something about her light making the shadows more dim
As if she's been adorning the Reeper's dark frock.
Searing my retinas Light casts her dark spell,
In my heart I can hear echoing Death's hollow knell.
Jessica, this one crawled right up under my skin. I could feel the mood, that ominous visitor disguised as an angel of light.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful words sweet sister. Sending love and prayers.
Thank you Leah...:)
DeleteI usually read sonnets on love. It gives rise to variable topics that could touch one's heart. I took some keywords~ an interplay on light and darkness; there was a general feeling of sadness that covered me.
ReplyDeleteAnyhow, you were faithful to the rhyme scheme. Wonderful for a writer that seeks creativity in every aspect in writing :)
Thank you Melissa...Your comment reminded me that most sonnets indeed do center themselves around the theme of love...oops! I'm so unromantic! lol Thanks for stopping by. :)
DeleteI too do not really understand the technicalities of writing a sonnet...I too am planning to go by the rhyme scheme. You have done a wonderful job. Loved this...very profound.
ReplyDeleteThank you Janaki...Apparently I still don't understand the technicalities since I realized not too long ago that I forgot some lines! oops! This Challenge has definitely been a challenge and has shown me I have tons to learn in the ways of poetry. :)
DeletePowerful and deeply moving poem, love it.

Sulekkha..I've been loving your poems! Thanks for stopping by. :)
DeleteJessica your poems always have a mysterious quality and this is no different. I applaud you for sticking to the prompts and challenging yourself. I'm going to try to do at least three prompts this week. You and Sweepy are inspiring me. This was a joy to read. :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you Tameka..Even though I'm very behind in this Challenge it's been fun and I've been enjoying reading what everyone else has been coming up with. ~ blessings
DeleteAmazing imagery and mystique . . . the dawn, which should hold hope and promise for a new day brings with it, instead, the presence of gloom and futility. Reminds me, too, how the evil one parades his schemes and snares in brightly colored, tempting packages which, when opened, leave us with a sense of loss and loneliness.
ReplyDeleteThe sonnet rhythm is not perfect, Jessica, but the rhyming scheme was perfectly adhered to. Sonnets are some of the most difficult types of poetry to write. Kudos to you!
And, of course, blessings!
Thank you Martha...Loved your comment....so true. Glad you liked the imagery. :)

WOW ..when you can drag someone into your words then you know you are a good writer... this is so unusual for you.. you are all about light and faith... this fits in my blog ..the darkness....I am impressed...to be able to write in various dynamics...from all sides ..talent... kudos to you... loving you...As always...XOXOXOXO
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm tapping a bit into the entire spectrum Bonnie ;)...A book I'm reading on how to live more integrally suggests trying to see oneself and one's environment from as many perspectives as possible. I'm trying to look not only on the light side of the coin but the dark...to see the entire thing. ;)
DeleteGlad you enjoyed it! The above probably made no sense lol..sorry...I love when you stop by :)...blessings
I loved this!! Sometimes the sunrise is about as welcome as the grim reaper. :)
ReplyDeleteI'll have a little poetry prompt and contest up on my blog tomorrow that will run through the week. xo
Looking forward to stopping by Rachel and check out what's happening. Sounds exciting! Thanks for stopping by here...I'm glad you enjoyed it! :)
DeleteOh my darling Jessica! I love you way with rhyme, always have, and this poem has some striking images. But alas, it only has 10 lines ... <3<3<3
ReplyDeleteOh no! lol....oops! Well, I think I'll try to go back and revise it in the near future...maybe post it another day for the Challenge..this time with four extra lines !
ReplyDeleteBtw Sweepy...Thank you for letting me know that! :) I'm not much for reading directions...I guess I should read the prompts more mindfully! Directions bore me and I tend to just glance through them. Anyways, I appreciate that you stopped by and have been really enjoying your poetry during the Challenge. See you around the blogosophere. :)
DeleteHello Jessica.
ReplyDeleteI am an early riser...my days usually start at 4:30am...so dawn for me is the perfect time for quiet reflection & even poetry writing while my wife is still asleep. This is a moody piece...kind of reflects how I'm feeling these days. Still nicely done. Thanks for sharing.
Day 15 (17): Open My Eyes
Hi Jessica:
ReplyDeleteFocusing on two words here:
weaving and painting.
Those words stood out to me for some reason. Artistic.
Do you paint?
Do you weave?
If you don't maybe you should give it a try. Why use those words, unless something somewhere is nudging you in that direction? Just a thought.
